Today, let’s talk about the incredible world of Zone 2 exercise – a key element of our daily workouts at The Smart Fit Method. So, what exactly is Zone 2, and why should you make it a regular part of your fitness routine? Let’s dive right in and explore the many benefits of this powerful exercise method.

What is Zone 2?

Zone 2 exercise is all about working out at a specific intensity level. There are a couple of ways to calculate your Zone 2 using your heart rate in beats per minute. Check out the options below to choose the method that suits you best.

Traditional Calculation: One way to calculate your Zone 2 is based on your maximum heart rate. To do this, simply subtract your age from 220 and then take 60-70% of the resulting number. For instance, if you’re 54 years of age, your Zone 2 would be calculated as 220-54=166 and then 166×60%=99.6 or 166×70%=116.2. Using this method gives you a range of 99 to 116 beats per minute for your Zone 2.

Dr. Phil Maffetone’s Method: Another way to determine your Zone 2 is by using Dr. Phil Maffetone’s formula, which is even simpler. Just subtract your age from 180, and you’ll get your Zone 2 range. For a someone who is 54-years of age, this would translate to a Zone 2 range of 126 at the high end.

Why exercise in Zone 2?

Now that you know how to calculate it, you might wonder why Zone 2 exercise is so important. Well, there are several compelling reasons:

1. Improve your aerobic capacity: Zone 2 exercise builds a stronger and wider baseline for aerobic activity. The wider your base of performance, the higher your peaks of performance are too. This enhances your overall fitness and ability to perform aerobically.

2. Burn fat: Are you interested in becoming a fat-burning machine? Zone 2 is your ticket to efficient fat oxidation. Instead of burning glycogen to burn calories, in Zone 2 you target fat stores for energy use. This helps you achieve your body composition goals more effectively.

3. Enjoy active recovery: Zone 2 counts as active recovery. You can keep moving and stay active while giving your body a break. This makes it a versatile and accessible exercise zone that you can explore as much as you want.

4. Enhance your aerobic efficiency: As you continue exercising in Zone 2, you’ll become more aerobically efficient. This means you’ll generate more kilowatts of energy per kilogram of body weight aka you’ll be able to do more without feeling overwhelmed. You’ll be more capable of greater aerobic challenges.

5. Improve your performance across the board: As you consistently exercise in Zone 2,  you’ll notice improvements in every other zone of exercise. For example, getting faster in Zone 2 means getting faster in every other zone.
