What Is Healthspan, and How Do You Train for It?

Two people turn 80 the same week. One still drives herself to lunch and gets down on the floor with her grandkids. The other needs a hand out of the chair. They've been alive almost exactly as long as each other, but there is a big difference in the lives they live. 

The word for that difference is healthspan.

Healthspan vs Lifespan

Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how long you stay capable, with a body that functions well and years that aren't impacted by chronic disease. 

For the better part of a century, we’ve chased lifespan. We added years to the average life. What we didn't add at the same pace was good health to fill them.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic looked across 183 countries and found that people now spend an average of 9.6 years at the end of life burdened by disease or disability. In the United States, it stretches to 12.4 years, the widest gap of any nation they studied.

12.4 years of life not fully lived...of retirement plans put aside. Putting more life in your lifespan comes down to shrinking that number and reclaiming as many of those years as your body will give back.

Your Healthspan Is Built, Not Inherited

When you ask people what decides how they age, most of them point to genetics. And while genes do play a real role in how long you live, you'd be surprised how much of how well you live comes down to things you can actually control.

The capacities that predict a long, functional life all respond to training. It comes down to how well your body uses oxygen, how much force your muscles can produce, how you process fuel, and how quickly you recover, right down to whether you can catch yourself when you trip. None of it is fixed at birth. All of it responds to the right work at 45, at 65, even at 80. You invest in a financial retirement plan, but what about your physical retirement plan? 

So healthspan really does come down to what you do with your body. You can build it, and you can watch it improve.

How You Train for Healthspan

Exercise for longevity comes down to a handful of physical markers that research keeps linking to how long, and how well, people live. 

Cardiorespiratory Fitness

VO₂ max is a measure of how well your body takes in and uses oxygen when you're working hard. It also is one of the strongest predictors we have of how long you'll live. In a study of more than 122,000 patients, it forecast all-cause mortality more reliably than blood pressure or cholesterol.

If you're past 40, there's a real reason to be encouraged here. VO₂ max keeps responding to the right conditioning well into later life, and it doesn't take a marathon to move it, just consistent work that asks your cardiovascular system to adapt.

Strength and Muscle

After 50, an untrained body loses somewhere between 1 and 2% of its muscle every year, and strength can slip even faster. By 80, someone who never trained may have shed half the muscle they once carried, along with the power to stop a simple stumble from turning into a fall. And falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in adults over 65.

Structured resistance training can turn that trajectory around, though, and often faster than people expect. What matters most as you age is eccentric strength, the braking force that keeps a trip from becoming a fracture, and that's exactly what deliberate strength work builds.

Body Composition and Metabolic Health

The number on the scale barely tells you how you're aging. What matters far more is the ratio underneath it, how much of your weight is working muscle versus stored fat. Muscle is active tissue that helps steady your blood sugar and keeps your joints supported. Fat around the organs pulls in the opposite direction and feeds the chronic conditions that eat into healthspan. Training that adds lean mass while trimming fat shifts that balance in your favor, and it can happen even when the scale itself barely budges. It’s also important to note that there is no one “right” number. Each individual has unique factors that influence what their goal might be. 

Recovery

The rebuilding happens after your workout, while you sleep and recover. Good sleep, contrast therapy, low-key movement, and a sensible balance of stress and rest, all of it is the work that lets everything else compound instead of slowly wearing you down. A longevity-minded plan treats recovery as part of the training, with the same intention you bring to a focused workout. 

You Can't Improve What You Don't Measure

The reassuring thing is that every marker that predicts healthspan can be tested, from VO₂ max and strength across each movement pattern to body fat percentage, resting heart rate, and blood pressure. A useful assessment hands you a baseline, a read on how your body is aging against the calendar, and a starting line you can train away from. From there, you retest. The number either moves or it doesn't, and you adjust accordingly. That simple feedback loop is how you know if your plan is working.

What This Looks Like in Practice

We recently pulled the assessment records from 171 members at one of our studios. Their average age was 57, ranging from 40 all the way up to 92, and we measured every one of them against national benchmarks.

  • Cardiovascular fitness of people 10 to 15 years younger, with new members climbing from the population average to the 77th percentile after a couple of years of training.

  • Leg press output up 32% on average, and eccentric leg strength, the fall-catching kind, up 47%.

  • Body fat sitting below national norms for their age group: men at 27% against a 31% average, women at 34% against 42%.

  • Resting heart rate under 70 bpm for 79% of them, with more than a third landing in the athlete range below 60.

At an average age of 57, these are people carrying the cardiovascular fitness and functional strength of someone a decade or more younger. And they didn't get there by grinding themselves into the ground, but by training against their own numbers and adjusting as those numbers moved.
