Protein spotlight: Mikuna and Promix

Smart Fit Method

Protein is one of those macronutrients that has a reputation for being only for men and serious athletes, but supplementing your diet with protein powder is one of the single most effective ways to affect body composition changes. When you supplement your diet with protein powder, you can burn more fat, build more muscle, and recover more quickly from exercise.

We’ve written about protein extensively because it’s simply worth talking about. Now, we want to discuss two specific brands we recommend.

Recommended protein powder brands

And why do we bother recommending a supplement? Aren’t all protein powders basically the same?

Absolutely not.

The FDA does not regulate dietary supplements, so it’s important to purchase and consume a brand you trust. But how do you know which brands to trust? Influencers will try to sell you on any hot new brand on the market. The tried and true formulations are a much safer bet, especially when recommended by a professional.

At The Smart Fit Method, we take our recommendations seriously. We want our clients to consume the best products with the healthiest ingredients and optimized formulations. Simply put, there are too many products saturating the market, and many of them are little more than a waste of money.

What protein powder should I take?

The protein powders we recommend in our Smart Fit Method longevity studios are ideal options for any gender - and any age. Our retail shelves carry simple formulations with outstanding results.

Mikuna

Mikuna is a protein powder brand from California that boasts sustainable farming practices. This protein powder is vegan and non-GMO. It is also free of gluten, gums, lectin, sugar and Stevia.

“Found only in the Andes Mountains at an elevation of 11,000-14,000 feet. Chocho is extremely nutrient-dense and packed with protein, fiber, iron, and calcium. Chocho creates a cycle of regeneration. It thrives on rain water alone, nourishes the body, and pulls nitrogen deep into the soil as it grows, making the soil healthier and more fertile for future crops.”

Mikuna offers a few great flavor options and an unflavored, single-ingredient option, perfect for trainees with food allergies.

Promix

Promix is our whey protein option. This brand has a reputation for being no-nonsense, and including only the things you need. They boast “No Artificial Anything” on their website and source 94% of their ingredients in North America. Their whey powder is easy on the stomach, contains relatively few ingredients, and the flavors are built with natural ingredients.

What is creatine?

You can also buy Promix creatine at The Smart Fit Method, one of the most trusted supplements for athletes.

Creatine is a supplement that is widely regarded as being safe and effective for everyone. It is cheap to make so it is a cost-effective way to improve your athletic recovery.

Creatine is an amino acid found naturally in muscle tissue that helps your muscles produce energy. It is the most widely-researched supplement aside from protein powder. The advantages of taking creatine include greater strength and better recovery.

Mix a 5g scoop of creatine into your electrolyte powder or your protein shake daily. It’s flavorless so it will stack well with any other powdered supplement.

Do men and women need to have different protein powders?

This is another bogus, evidence-lacking claim made in the supplement space. Do men and women need different formulations of protein powder?

Men and women do not need different formulations for protein powder. Many supplements formulated for women will include extra ingredients like collagen or iron, but if you are not deficient in these ingredients, you do not need to supplement them. Less is more on your protein powder nutrition labels, so read carefully.

Gender does not determine the amount of protein you need, either, although this is a common misconception. Your body weight and muscle mass determine your protein needs. Check out this article where we calculate how much protein you need.
